Many of us use the same skin care products and techniques we learned years if not decades ago.

What we seem to forget is that many of the things we do out of habit are often doing more harm than good.

Picking & Poking

Just dont! There is often the temptation to pick or poke at a blemish to try to make it go away, but it’s only guaranteed to make it worse. Most blemishes will last 5-7 days but if you pick at it the resulting scar can make it last for months if not forever.

Best practice is to leave it alone except to conceal (if you must) and allow blemishes to heal naturally.

Pulling & Dragging

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate skin on your face. Yet many times as we apply or remove makeup we end up pulling and dragging the skin in the process. Pulling on the skin when applying eyeliner, putting in contacts and even when removing makeup can tear the delicate collagen and fibres in your skin. All this pulling and dragging can break down the elasticity within your skin and over time can cause visible lines and wrinkles.

The best way to apply eye cream is to use your ring finger (which naturally asserts less pressure than the index finger) and to use a gentle patting motion then let the cream soak in naturally. Always avoid tugging, pulling and rubbing.

Aggressive Rubbing

We’ve all heard that misting your skin with toner is a best application method but it’s actually important to use wiping motion when applying toner’s because they’re designed to remove cleanser, residue, salts and chemicals that can dehydrate your skin. If you stop at misting you’re simply adding another layer that will dilute but not remove chemicals to allow your skin to breathe.

Always use an alcohol free toner wiping it gently over your skin with a clean cotton cloth or pad, this ensures you remove all traces of chemicals before applying your chosen day or night time moisturizer.

Product Re-Loading

Use a clean soft washcloth or facial sponge to remove make-up, oils and residue at the end of your day. But don’t wait until you are ready to go to bed, cleanse your skin after dinner and give your night time rituals a little extra time to do their work. Don’t rub aggressively as this can irritate and stimulate melanin especially if you’re prone to brown spots and again being heavy handed with the rubbing can cause extra wear and tear affecting your skin’s elasticity. Baby washcloths often have the softest fibres or a good facial sponge will help cleanse your skin without excessive tugging or dragging on your skin.

It’s super important to wash you face well in the morning. While we sleep our skin is in “repair” mode, that means it actually secrets oils and sebums that will stop your daytime products from being effective. If you don’t wash your face before you apply daytime products, you’ll simply be piling daytime products on top of night time products and neither will be able to work effectively as your skin won’t be able to absorb them properly.

Washing your skin in the shower with a soft washcloth will give you a clean slate and allow daytime products with sunscreen to protect your skin. Look for sulfate free cleansers for best results.

Using The Same Skincare Routine Year Round

Just as the seasons change, so should your skin care routine.
