The concept of self care is something that people seem to talk about, but rarely practice. Some people feel guilty when they take time out of the day to take care of themselves, and while this is an understandable thought process, it’s not fair to you or your family.

There are many benefits to self care that you may not realize.

Mental Health

Time to yourself promotes mental health, increased relaxation, and prevents chronic stress. By setting some time aside for ourselves we give our minds and bodies valuable time to recoup, relax, and prepare for the rest of the week and remind others that your feelings and needs are important as well as theirs. Taking the time to care for yourself both mentally and physically shows others that you value your body and your life; this helps you set up long-term feelings of self worth.

Family Dynamics

Caring for children is a lot of work! It can be very stressful at times and by taking an hour or two for yourself you are doing everyone a favor, not just yourself. People who ignore their own needs in place of the needs of others, (including children, parents, or significant others) often end up with low self-esteem, unhappiness, and sometimes feelings of resentment. Taking time to yourself on a regular basis makes you a better mom/spouse/person.

Stress

Taking a quick break to have a nice bubble bath or a soothing massage can make you feel like a brand new person. Even a half hour curled up with a book can help your body relax and your mind refresh itself for the rest of your day. Set aside some time for yourself every day and give your mind a little mini-vacation.

Self-Esteem Boost

If your hair, skin, and body looks great you’re going to feel great. Being healthy means that you’ll have more self esteem and confidence, and who couldn’t use a little more of that?

• Get a manicure
• Take a bubble bath
• Book a massage
• Get a facial
• Read a book
• Have Coffee with a friend
• Meditate
• Deep Condition your hair
• Soak your feet

The next time you’re feeling stressed out or overwhelmed, try to stop and assess the situation. Are you feeling this way because you’ve been neglecting yourself? Do you need to set some time aside to tend to your own needs? Remember to take care of yourself first!
